What Overflows for You?

Kathleen Delaney

It often seems like my brain is managing two bottles: logic — a steady golden oil, and emotion  — a swirling blue sea. Logic helps me meet deadlines and stay professional, while emotion drives creativity and passion. But for these two to mix successfully, a delicate balance is required.

When Logic Leads

For some (like me) logic is the default. It provides clarity, structure, and a reliable foundation for decision-making. But others may naturally lean toward emotion, allowing feelings to guide their choices. Neither approach is inherently better — it’s about finding a balance between the two that really counts.

While it’s important to keep it from overflowing, it’s easier to stay focused and consistent when logic takes the lead. However, even the most logical freelancer must adapt when emotions inevitably rise.

Time-tested Regulator

My favorite solution for maintaining balance is a simple recipe: one part time, one part distance. Time allows emotions to settle, while distance helps you step back and regain perspective. Together, they create an “emotion regulator” to bring things back to manageable levels.

Next time emotions start to spill over, pause and add a little space between yourself and the problem. This gives logic room to reassert itself without dismissing the value of emotion.

Finding the Balance

Balancing logic and emotion is a constant process. My logic ensures professionalism, while my emotion fuels creativity and connection. Freelancers thrive when they let both coexist without allowing one to dominate.

So, what tends to overflow for you — logic or emotion? Would a mix of time and distance help you regain balance?
